Guan Yin 观音
Goddess of Mercy · Bodhisattva of Compassion
Guan Yin is the most widely worshipped deity in East Asia, and her name means “the one who perceives the sounds of the world.” She arrived in China as the male bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara and, over several centuries of Chinese devotion, became a white-robed woman holding a willow branch and a vase of pure water. Legend says she stood at the threshold of nirvana, heard the weeping of everyone she would leave behind, and turned back — vowing not to enter paradise until every being could come with her.
Her thousand-armed, eleven-headed form exists because compassion needs reach: one pair of hands cannot answer every prayer at once. Childless couples pray to her, as do the sick and the grieving, and her festival draws crowds from Putuoshan to Los Angeles. In Chinese religion she is the counterweight to every fierce deity — proof that the mythology valued mercy as highly as martial power.
